How Many Recessed Lights Does a Room Need?

It depends on the room's size, the ceiling height and what you do there. A common starting point is to space lights about half the ceiling height apart, so an 8 foot ceiling gets lights roughly 4 feet apart. Kitchens need focused light over counters and the sink, not just a grid in the middle of the room. Living rooms often look best with fewer lights and dimmers. Basements with low ceilings call for slim wafer lights that fit between joists. Too many lights wash a room out, while too few leave dark corners and shadows on the counter where you chop food. Electrical Hazards, Inc. draws a quick layout on paper before cutting any holes, which saves you from patching mistakes later.

Layout Rules of Thumb

  • Spacing about half the ceiling height
  • Task light over counters and sinks
  • Start 2 to 3 feet from walls
  • Dimmers in living spaces
  • Wafer lights for low basements
How We Do It

Safe Installs in Old Ceilings and Tight Attics

Recessed lights sit inside your ceiling, so heat and insulation matter. Under NEC 410.116, fixtures need proper clearance from combustible materials unless the manufacturer rates them for insulation contact. We use IC-rated, airtight fixtures wherever insulation is present, which also stops warm air from leaking into the attic. Older Philadelphia homes bring extra challenges, like plaster ceilings, odd joist spacing and old wiring above. We check what is up there before we cut. Each run gets proper support and connections in an accessible junction box. We hold City of Philadelphia license #37352 and pull permits where the job needs them. We also match each dimmer to the fixtures, which is the most common cause of LED flicker and hum.

  • Ceiling and attic checked first

Why It Pays Off

Better Light That Adds Value

Good lighting changes how a room feels and how buyers see it. Recessed LEDs make kitchens look bigger, brighten work areas and give living rooms a clean, finished ceiling. They also save energy. The U.S. Department of Energy says residential LEDs use at least 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs. That means fewer ladder trips to replace burned-out lights. If you are remodeling, add recessed lights while the ceiling is open, and the job gets faster and cleaner. If your ceiling already has drywall or plaster, we work through small openings and leave the room ready for touch-up paint. Either way, you get a lighting plan built for the way you use the room.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you install recessed lights in a finished ceiling?
Yes. We plan the layout around joists and fish wiring through small openings, so you don't need to tear out the ceiling.
What does IC-rated mean?
An IC-rated fixture is built to touch insulation safely. We use them anywhere insulation is present above the ceiling.
Why do some LED lights flicker on a dimmer?
The dimmer and the LED driver don't match. We use dimmers listed for the fixtures we install, which stops the flicker and buzz.
Are wafer lights as good as can lights?
For most homes, yes. Wafer lights are slim, bright and great for low ceilings. Can lights still make sense for some accent and trim styles.
Do recessed lights let heat into the attic?
Older non-airtight cans can. Modern airtight fixtures seal that gap and help keep heating and cooling bills down.
