Job: Outlets, GFCIs, meter box and breakers to bring an old house up to code
A smart panel shows which circuits use power, lets you switch some of them from your phone, and helps your home take on an EV charger, heat pump or battery without guesswork.
A standard panel protects your circuits and nothing more. It can't tell you what uses power or when. A smart panel, or a standard panel fitted with smart breakers, measures each circuit and sends the data to an app. You can see the dryer, the AC and the EV charger as separate lines, spot a fridge that runs too often, and turn some circuits off from your phone. Some systems can also cut back a big load, like an EV charger, when the house nears its limit. That can help a home add new loads without a full service upgrade, as long as the load calculation backs it up. Systems differ in how they work, so we talk through the options that fit your panel space, your service size and your plans.
We start with a load calculation under NEC Article 220, the same math we use for any panel upgrade. It tells us whether your service is big enough, or whether the meter, service cable and panel should be upgraded together. Next, we confirm the system you pick suits your setup and that your Wi-Fi reaches the panel location. We file the permit with Licenses and Inspections or your township, schedule any PECO shutoff, then install the panel, move and label each circuit, and set up the app with you. Electrical Hazards, Inc. holds City of Philadelphia license #37352, and every job ends with the inspection and a walkthrough of how to read your circuit data.
A smart panel costs more than a standard one, so it should earn its place. It makes the most sense when you plan to add big loads, want to track energy use closely, or want to pair the panel with solar and backup power. If your goal is simply to replace a fuse box or an unsafe panel, a standard 200 amp panel may be the better value, and some panel brands let you add smart breakers later. When it helps you decide, we price both options side by side. Either way, the panel gets sized by real numbers, not a guess.
Call Electrical Hazards, Inc. at (267) 977-2106. Send a photo of your current panel and tell us what you plan to add, and we will tell you which options fit and what each one costs.
